Iron Infusion FAQ — Your Questions Answered

About the treatment

An iron infusion is a treatment where iron is delivered directly into your bloodstream through a small drip in your arm. It bypasses your digestive system entirely, which means no nausea or constipation — and it works much faster than tablets. The whole process is supervised by a trained medical professional.

The infusion itself takes approximately 30 minutes. After that, you'll be monitored for a further 30 minutes to make sure you're feeling well. Most patients are in and out of the clinic within an hour.

You'll feel a small scratch when the cannula (a tiny plastic tube) is placed in your arm — similar to a blood test. Once the drip is running, most patients don't feel any discomfort at all. Many read, scroll their phones, or simply relax during the infusion.

Most people feel nothing unusual during the infusion itself. Some patients notice a slight cool sensation in the arm as the iron solution enters the vein. You'll be seated comfortably throughout and can bring a book, headphones, or your phone.

A single iron infusion can deliver up to 1000mg of iron — the equivalent of what would take over five months of daily oral supplements. The exact dose is calculated by Dr Ros based on your blood results and clinical needs.

We use ferric carboxymaltose, a NICE-recommended IV iron that has been used extensively across NHS hospitals and private clinics throughout the UK. It allows a high dose to be delivered safely in a single sitting with a well-established safety profile.

Iron tablets are absorbed through your gut, which is slow and often causes side effects like constipation, nausea, and stomach cramps. Many people can't tolerate them or don't absorb them properly. An iron infusion delivers iron directly into your bloodstream — faster, more effective, and without the digestive side effects.

Eligibility & referrals

No. You can self-refer directly to IronOx Clinic — no GP letter or referral is needed. If you have recent blood results (within 3 months), bring them along. If not, we can arrange blood testing for you.

If you're experiencing symptoms of iron deficiency — persistent fatigue, brain fog, hair loss, breathlessness, or restless legs — and iron tablets haven't helped (or you can't tolerate them), an iron infusion may be appropriate. Book a consultation and Dr Ros will assess your situation based on your symptoms and blood results.

Generally, a ferritin level below 30 µg/L may indicate a need for iron replacement — but the decision isn't based on a single number. Dr Ros considers your ferritin alongside your haemoglobin, symptoms, and overall clinical picture to determine whether an infusion is right for you.

Yes. Iron infusion is commonly used during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, particularly when oral iron isn't tolerated or ferritin is critically low. A clinical assessment is required to confirm suitability. Book a consultation and Dr Ros will advise on the best approach for you and your baby.

IronOx Clinic treats adult patients aged 18 and over. If you're under 18 and concerned about iron deficiency, we'd recommend speaking to your GP or paediatrician in the first instance.

Safety & side effects

Yes. IV iron is a NICE-recommended treatment that has been administered thousands of times across NHS hospitals and private clinics in the UK. At IronOx Clinic, every infusion is supervised by a trained medical professional with full monitoring throughout and anaphylaxis protocols in place as standard.

Headache, nausea, flushing or dizziness can occur and are usually short-lived. If iron leaks outside the vein, it can leave a brown skin stain that may be long-lasting or permanent. Ferric carboxymaltose can also lower blood phosphate, particularly with repeated high doses. Dr Ros will discuss the risks relevant to you before treatment; see our dedicated iron infusion risks page for more detail.

Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, are rare. The Ferinject product information classifies anaphylaxis as occurring in at least 1 in 10,000 but fewer than 1 in 1,000 people; that is a medicine-wide estimate, not an IronOx-specific rate. We monitor you during the infusion and for at least 30 minutes afterwards, with trained staff and emergency equipment available. Tell us about any previous reactions or allergies before treatment.

Yes. Most patients are able to drive themselves home after the 30-minute monitoring period. Serious reactions are extremely rare. If you'd prefer to have someone with you for your first visit, that's absolutely fine too.

If you feel unwell during the infusion, let the clinical team know immediately — you'll be monitored throughout. If you experience any symptoms after leaving the clinic, you can contact us directly. We provide aftercare guidance and our contact details so you're never left without support.

Booking & logistics

You can book online in about 2 minutes — no phone calls or emails needed. Simply choose your appointment type and select a time that suits you. If you'd prefer to speak to someone first, you can also call or email us directly.

We aim to offer same-week appointments wherever possible. Availability depends on demand, so booking a few days ahead is recommended. If you need an urgent appointment, get in touch and we'll do our best to accommodate you.

We ask for at least 48 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. This allows us to offer the slot to another patient who may be waiting. Full details are provided when you book.

Bring any recent blood results (within the last 3 months) if you have them — this can save you needing additional testing. You don't need to fast. Wear something with sleeves that are easy to roll up, and feel free to bring a book, headphones, or your phone to pass the time.

IronOx Clinic is located on Cathedral Road in Cardiff (CF11). The area is well-served by public transport and there is on-street parking nearby. Full directions and parking details are sent to you when you book your appointment.

After your infusion

Most patients notice a meaningful improvement in energy and symptoms within 1 to 2 weeks as iron levels restore. Some feel better within days, though full benefit can take a few weeks. Individual results vary depending on the severity of your deficiency and your overall health.

Many patients only need a single infusion. However, if you have an ongoing cause of iron loss (such as heavy periods or a malabsorption condition), you may need a repeat infusion in the future. Dr Ros will advise you on follow-up based on your individual circumstances.

Yes. With your consent, we send a full clinical report to your GP within 24 hours of your infusion. This includes details of your treatment, the iron dose administered, and any follow-up recommendations — so your GP has a complete picture.

We recommend taking it easy for the rest of the day after your infusion. Light activity is fine, but it's best to avoid strenuous exercise until the following day. Stay well-hydrated and give your body time to respond to the iron.
